Yamaha DT2-MX
Technical Details
  • Year : 1972
  • Engine : 250 cc Two-stroke single ( originally with Autolube oil injection )
  • Transmission : 5-Speed
  • Electrics : Nippon-Denso magneto with internal rotor & points
  • Notable Features : With the introduction of the DT2-MX, Yamaha Motor Co. had made serious progress in developing their high-performance motorcycles for off-road riding & racing. Based on the earlier DT1 motor, reed valve induction was now used allowing the cylinder to incorporate auxiliary boost porting. Total power increased over a wider torque curve and the revised cylinder & head was cast with additional cooling fin area to handle the heat appropriately. A new style neoprene manifold was a needed improvement. It damped vibration & reduced heat transfer to a spigot-mount 30 mm Mikuni VM carburetor. A re-routed up & over exhaust pipe no longer cooked a rider's right leg. Frame geometry was improved with the motor positioned lower for better handling. Foot pegs were cleated to eliminate slippage in muddy conditions. The seat was re-profiled & padding improved. Alloy rims were always a must have and Yamaha delivered. Factory rear shocks remained marginal and the cycle displayed here uses aluminum Works Performance units with twin springs providing dual rates. This particular DT2-MX cycle was purchased during 2002 from John Astleford in Georgia. John owned & operated a precision machine shop manufacturing custom parts for motocross racing. The Yamaha was raced in various AHRMA events and has been maintained properly. It runs perfectly and although spots of cosmetic wear can be seen, the internal components and especially the magneto proved to be " like new ". John's work was always good.
