- Year : 1974
- Engine : 125 cc Two-stroke single
- Transmission : 5-Speed
- Electrics : Hitachi CDI magneto with internal rotor
- Notable Features : During 1974, the YZ-250A was offered in limited numbers to provide a cost-effective machine based upon the factory's " works specials ". For the 125 class, it was a logical move to build a scaled-down version of the semi-works 250. Here, a YZ-125A exemplifies the closely-matched products. Similarities between the YZ-250 and YZ-125 models included alloy seven-port cylinders with hard chrome bores, CDI ignitions, reed valve intakes, Mikuni VM carburetors, high volume air filters, Thermo-flow rear shocks, aluminum rims, unbreakable plastic fenders, and Yamaha's signature " strap tank " feature which allowed the identically-painted aluminum fuel tanks to ride securely without being affected by vibration. Details such as bolts with lightened heads were more abundant on the 250 models but the 125 follows suit in several areas. However, the most important job for any small displacement racer is having the ability to make high-horsepower dependably. Comparatively, the YZ-125A was not quite considered the equal of the legendary 250 model but by the mid-1970's the small-bore Yamaha products were well-known for their power & dependability. Their motorcycles ran fast from start to finish and the YZ-125A model was no exception. Factory records show production was more than 7600 units thereby proving the high demand during the era. Our cycle is stamped with matching numbers.
